Sagas of the Early Days

by Windsor Lang

Sagas of the Early Days was a series of 26 articles published weekly in the Northern Star between 2 November 1946 and 10 May 1947. Each article covered the very early days of white settlement on the Richmond River and explores different themes, people and topics.

Windsor Lang was born in 1886 in Woodburn NSW of parents Catherine Maria (née Monaghan, formerly Langley) 1843-1889 and John Lang (1848-1947).  John was a pioneer of the area having settled at Woodburn in 1866.

Windsor was apprenticed as a dentist but then became a school teacher. He married and had a family before serving with the AIF in WWI. After the war he resumed his teaching career and was Headmaster at South Lismore Public School. Upon his retirement he became a patron to the Richmond River Historical Society. He interviewed many of the pioneers for this series and researched in depth the origins of the Richmond River white settlement.
