Other Recreations

The Hunt boys (whose father was a strict Methodist) always played tennis on Sundays, then went to Paff’s to play cards – their father said it was bad enough that they played tennis on the Sabbath but to go and play cards with Catholics was very wicked indeed. Card tournaments were all the go and Dad would get out the old T Model Ford truck, and pick up all the neighbours and take them to cards – we also had big days at Evans Head, everybody joined in. Tennis days and cricket matches were very popular too. We also had big house parties at our home with dancing. My father played the accordion, also Jack Dolby, Mrs Antoniolli played the violin and the bagpipes. Her two children “Jocky” and Ruby were champion highland dancers. Barbara S.

Depression days. Butter was down to sixpence a pound and money was very scarce. We had to live very frugally, but managed to entertain ourselves with simple pleasures. Ladies’ tennis afternoons every Thursday, a Euchre Tournament at the school after the P & C meeting once a month. Probably a tennis match every Saturday. Our clothes were very simple. Fuji silk was a great standby. Frequently washed and ironed to perfection, looked very nice. We used to gather at various homes, frequently at night, with our music and have a sing- song around the piano. The wireless and later on the TV put an end to the sing- songs, which was a great pity really. Gladys Hunt
