District Cemeteries

Coraki: The final resting place for the very earliest of Richmond River’s residents, the cemetery dates back to the 1860s.

The volunteers and historians from around the district have teamed up to produce Cemetery Death and Burial Registers. Completed so far are Coraki, Tucki Tucki, Woodburn & Evans Head cemeteries. Copies are available from the Richmond Valley libraries & Casino Family History group.

Evans Head contains 25 Commonwealth War Graves from the WWII RAAF base.

A Bend in the River by Samantha Elley covers the people buried at Woodburn Cemetery.
As well as a comprehensive index, Samantha has written the biographies of many of the Woodburn founders and those who shaped the town through the centuries. Available from her website Tales from the Grave alongside many other interesting stories.

Ballina Pioneer Cemetery sits overlooking Shaw’s Bay and contains the headstones of many of the early pioneers. The first burial was in 1853 and the last in 1915. The headstones were moved to Pioneer Park in 1961 to form a wall.
